My sister and I will be visiting Greece in October for 2 weeks. We plan to visit Sparta which is our fathers’ hometown. We are planning on 2 days to visit the area. We could use some assistance in planing this with bets way to get there, where to stay, what to visit. Thank you
I’ve been in Sparta once an I can say it is not a nice or picturesque town.
In fact, I believe it was voted as one of the ugliest towns in Greece to be honest… (no offense obv)
HOWEVER, the area around Sparta (northern Pelloponese) is s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g !!
The best thng you can do is to hire a car and explore the whole area as there are literlaly hundreds of beautiful and quiet beaches, super cute villages and really good food.
Hi @EPAPA and welcome to our forum!
It’s great that you are from Sparta as (yes, it might not be the most picturesque greek town these days) but the the whole Southern Peloponnese area is ont he most beautiful in Greece.
The best tthing you can actually do is to rent a car and visit as many areas as possible.
The beauty of that area is that you can have both worlds: stunning mountains and tropical beaches within 30 mins drive!
And of course the historical significance of Sparta is unparalleled but don’t expect to find any massive monuments or temples as the Spartans were literally living a…spartan life!
The best way to ge to Spart is with a car from Athens but you can also get the KTEL bus. It’s about 3 hrs drive and the motorway to there is (finally…) quite good though you have to pay tolls every now and then…
To be honest, I wouldn’t stay in Sparta…
I would rather stay in a beachfront town and there is lots of them in the south of Sparta.
The most famous one is called Gytheio: https://goo.gl/maps/9TUmFf2s8br9BcaA8
